Inlays And Onlays
Restoring Strength, Comfort And Confidence
If you have damaged or decayed teeth, it’s important to have a reliable, strong natural-looking restoration not only for appearances, but for comfort and function as well. In some cases, a traditional filling is enough. But sometimes you need something a little stronger for more severe damage or decay. When this occurs, Dr. Graham may recommend inlays and onlays.
What Are Inlays And Onlays?
Inlays are a special type of filling used when a cavity is large and deep inside the tooth. The inlay is made of a solid material, typically porcelain or ceramic, to blend in naturally and is created to fit the space precisely. Inlays are designed to last a long time and are more stable than traditional fillings. They are also resistant to shrinking and staining, offering a more aesthetically pleasing result.
Onlays are used when a larger portion of the tooth has been affected by damage or decay, particularly the biting surface. They are custom designed for your tooth and fabricated to blend seamlessly with your natural smile. Made from durable materials, onlays provide a longer lasting solution than traditional fillings. They also preserve more of your natural tooth structure than a full dental crown. Both inlays and onlays are proven tooth restoration options.
What To Expect During Your Inlay Or Onlay Treatment
The procedure for inlays and onlays typically take two appointments. One to prepare the site and determine the size and shape of your restoration and a second to place your custom inlay or onlay. Here’s what to expect from your first appointment to finally walking out with a more comfortable, healthier smile.
Do Inlays And Onlays Require Specific Care?
Whether you have an inlay or onlay, caring for it is simple and helps ensure it lasts anywhere from ten to thirty years, and in some cases even a lifetime.
For the first 24 to 48 hours following the placement of your inlay or onlay, avoid very hot, cold, hard or sticky foods. It is normal to experience some mild discomfort after the procedure, and we encourage patients to use over-the-counter pain medication as needed to stay comfortable.
In general, inlays and onlays should be cared for just like your natural teeth by maintaining proper oral hygiene. Brushing twice per day and flossing at least once per day are essential. Avoid chewing on very hard or sticky foods, such as ice or taffy, to help preserve your inlays and onlays for years to come.
