Full Vs Partial Removable Dentures

To ensure we offer solutions for a wide range of smile needs, we provide two main types of removable dentures along with additional variations. Dr. Graham will use his expertise and attention to detail to recommend options tailored to you.

Full Dentures

Full dentures replace all of the teeth on the upper and/or lower arch of teeth. For all types of full dentures, detailed impressions and measurements are taken of your gums and mouth to create a secure, comfortable fit. We also evaluate the way your jaws work together to ensure your removable dentures support a healthy bite. Dr. Graham will consider the shape of your face and lips to create a natural looking, balanced result. There are several types:

Conventional full dentures are created following any necessary tooth extractions, after the gums and jawbone have completely healed. This healing period typically requires several months and temporary or immediate dentures may be used during this time.

These removable dentures are fabricated in advance before any necessary extractions and can be placed right away without waiting for the gums and bone to heal and are often used as a temporary solution. Because the gums and jawbone can shrink after tooth loss, several adjustments may be needed over time to achieve the most comfortable fit.

Dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone and fuse with the bone over a period of months. Once the implants are secure, removable dentures are fabricated to attach to them. This type of denture offers excellent stability. Because implants stimulate jawbone tissue like natural tooth roots, they also help reduce bone loss over time.

Fixed dentures are also an option. These are attached to the implants using special screws and can only be removed by your dentist.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace multiple missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw, helping restore function and the appearance of your smile. They rely on healthy adjacent teeth for support and secure placement. Unlike bridges, which are permanently attached to neighboring teeth, partial dentures are removable and can be taken out for cleaning and daily care. They are typically held in place with attachments such as metal clasps or precision connectors.

A common form of partial denture uses a metal clasp attached to the end of the denture that fits snugly around a supporting tooth, holding it securely in place. These clasps can sometimes be visible when speaking or smiling, but Dr. Graham takes care to make them as discreet as possible.

Small interlocking metal components on both the partial denture and the adjacent teeth connect together for a secure, more seamless fit. These dentures may require crowns on the adjacent teeth.

Flexible partial dentures are made of a thermoplastic material and use translucent, gum colored extensions that discreetly fit around the base of the teeth near the gumline.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Like natural teeth, dentures require daily care to keep them healthy, comfortable and looking their best. Caring for your dentures is simple, and Dr. Graham will recommend a routine and products that work best for you.

Typically, they may suggest a specific cleaning routine that includes a soft bristled brush, a non abrasive cleaner and a soaking solution to help remove plaque and bacteria buildup.

What To Do If Dentures Are Damaged, Broken Or Uncomfortable

The first step in preventing issues with your dentures is keeping up with regular dental checkups to ensure they fit properly and that your gums and surrounding tissues remain healthy. However, we understand that things happen, and we are here to support you and your oral care no matter what.

If you damage, lose or experience sudden discomfort with your dentures, we encourage you to contact our office as soon as possible. Dr. Graham, or a member of our team will provide guidance on the next best steps based on your specific situation.

Purpose. Precision. Quality.
